4WD – How to choose Shocks

Which shocks should I choose?

So, you're wanting some aftermarket shocks but don't know what type or brand to pick?
We've gathered some easy to understand shock absorber info to help you select the right gear for your ride!

The purpose of a shock absorber is exactly as it is named; to absorb shocks, bumps, dips and dampen the suspension movements to ensure a smooth and comfortable ride.

This can be achieved using various design methods and technology, we offer the following;

  • Mono-Tube
  • High Pressure Gas
  • Twin-Tube
  • Hydraulic
  • Foam Cell
  • Adjustable Damping

Whilst all serve the same purpose the varying methods have different pros and cons or are suited to difference uses.

As a 'good all-rounder' option, Rancho RS5000X Shocks or Tough Dog Foam Cell Shocks are the most cost effective options we offer and an ideal aftermarket replacement. Both can easily handle mixed on-road and off-road use making them a perfect upgrade from OE.

Rancho RS5000X Shocks are a twin-tube gas pressurized shock with Progressive Engagement Valving. Specific valving technology activates in all stages of rebound and compression ensuring full control at high or low speeds to minimize any harsh ride quality.

Tough Dog Foam Cell Shocks are an award-winning shock and easily the most popular option we offer. Being mid-range in price, generous manufacture warranty period and quality design it's easy to see why these units are a top choice among consumers.
Designed with a micro-cellular foam insert that helps to drastically reduce the effects of shock fade the result is a longer lasting better performing shock.

Our more Premium options are the Bilstein B6, Tough Dog 40mm 9 Stage Adjustable and 82 Series Koni Heavy Track shocks.

Bilstein B6 Shocks are a mono-tube high-pressure gas unit which can be perceived as a firm ride quality, however this is preferred by some. The high pressure gas type shocks react instantly to changing conditions whilst providing optimum road adhesion and stability.

Tough Dog 9 Stage Adjustable Shocks feature their award winning foam cell technology plus the added benefit of external damping adjustment via a dial at the base of the shock. Adjustments alter both the rebound and compression forces and can be used to change the damping settings to suit the terrain, load or personal preference.

Koni 82 Series Shocks are a twin-tube hydraulic unit with internal rebound adjustment. Adjustments are made off the vehicle with the intent to counter general wear over time thus extending the life of the shock.

For serious off-road use, we offer Koni 88 Series Heavy Track, Koni 90 Series Raid, Tough Dog BMX 9 Stage Adjustable and Tough Dog Ralph Big Bore shocks. These options are on the higher end of the price range and are designed to handle dessert use, corrugations and touring making them the 'top of the line' choice for those who regularly head off the beaten track.

Tough Dog BMX 9 Stage Adjustable Shocks feature external damping adjustment via a dial at the base of the shock. Damping settings can be altered to suit the terrain, load or personal preference. With a 45mm internal bore and 70mm outer body diameter these units are a bigger bodied shock designed tough to handle almost any terrain.

Tough Dog Ralph shocks are the 'Big Dogs' designed with a massive 53mm bore and 22mm chrome piston rod, all housed in a 70mm outer body. Increased oil volume allows for efficient heat dissipation and will run cool even in the toughest conditions. These units are only available for a handful of models and are best suited to a fully loaded tourer.

Koni 88 Series Heavy Track Shocks are a twin-tube hydraulic unit with internal rebound adjustment. Adjustments are made off the vehicle with the intent to counter general wear over time thus extending the life of the shock. In additional to rebound adjustment, Koni shocks are serviceable making them a worthwhile investment. The 88 Series units feature a 55mm body diameter for high oil capacity and efficient heat dissipation.

Koni 90 Series Raid Shocks feature the same design as the 82 and 88 Series as a twin-tube hydraulic unit with internal rebound adjustment and serviceability.  However the Raid units boast a huge 70mm outer body diameter for maximum oil capacity and are proven in the Simpson Desert, Canning Stock Route and Dakar Rally. This is the top of the line product offered from Koni for 4WD Applications.
